Mersin University School of Medicine Lokman Hekim Journal of Medical History and Folk Medicine has published scientific studies on the socio-cultural dimensions of medicine and health, especially on the history of medicine and ethics, folklore, health sociology, folkloric medicine practices.  It aims to contribute to the increase of qualified scientific knowledge in the literature by publishing scientific studies on the subject.

Mersin University School of Medicine Lokman Hekim Journal of History of Medicine and Folk Medicine accepts only online submissions. 

Submissions are required to be inedited and unsent to another journal in order to be published. In the event that the papers contain (hard or soft copy) pre-published quotation, table, figure, illustration, etc. the author is supposed to obtain written permission from individuals or enterprises possessing the copyright and it should be notified in the paper. Previously presented or published abstracts of studies are admissible on condition that it is indicated in the manuscript.

After the scientific assessment, the authors’ names order in the submission is predicated on. Any modifications after this process are only possible contingent upon written statement and permission of all contributory authors.

Double blind peer review process

This journal uses double-blind review process. If the manuscripts meet the journal’s style, they are evaluated by the editor and two reviewer. If necessary, the requested changes are made by the authors and the article is published with the approval of the Editorial Board.

All mentioned authors should have made substantial contribution to the manuscript. All contributory authors, regarding all kind of consequences, are responsible of the submissions’ scientific and ethical compliance. Institutions - organizations providing financial support and all sorts of commercial ties should be informed in the application letter sent to editor. In experimental cases and cases from local studies which harvest personal information, “Ethics Committee Approval” should be obtained. Its presence should be indicated in the paper and the instrument of approval (to be sent in case editor’s request) should be maintained.

Mersin University School of Medicine Lokman Hekim Journal of History of Medicine and Folk Medicine invites the submission of scientific original article, review and monograph on history of medicine, medical sociology, Folklore Studıes and folk medical practice, letter to editor with reference, editorial comment and discussion, besides folkloric method and product publicity.

The journal accepts only online submissions; applications by regular surface / air or electronic mail will not be accepted for evaluation.

The suitability of the articles to scientific and ethical rules is under the responsibility of all authors with all their results.
When applying to the journal, the Editorial Transfer Form is signed by the responsible author and the Author Contribution Form is signed by all authors who contributed in the article. Mersin University School of Medicine Lokman Hekim History of Medicine and Folk  Medicine Journal is published under CCBY-NC license. All rights are returned for the rejected documents.

Scientific principles

The author must have at least one of the following features and declare to accept the final version of the manuscript.

·         Constructing the hypothesis or idea of research and/or article

·         Planning methodology to reach the conclusions

·         Organizing, supervising the course of progress and taking the responsibility of the research/study

·         Taking responsibility in patient follow-up, collection of relevant biological materials, data management and reporting, execution of the experiments

·         Taking responsibility in logical interpretation and conclusion of the results

·         Taking responsibility in necessary literature review for the study

·         Taking responsibility in the writing of the whole or important parts of the study

·         Reviewing the article before submission scientifically besides spelling and grammar

·         Providing personnel, environment, financial support tools that are vital for the study

·         Biological materials, taking responsibility of the referred patients

In experimental cases( human and animal experiment) and cases from local studies which harvest personal information, “Ethics Committee Approval” should be obtained. Its presence should be indicated in the paper and the instrument of approval (to be sent in case editor’s request) should be maintained.

Ethical Responsibility

In all human studies, the researchers stated that in the “Materials and Methods” section, they conducted the study in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration Principles (http://www.wma.net/en/30publications/10policies/b3/index.html), and that the ethics committees of their institutions and “Informed consent an from the people who participated in the study.

If “Animal” is used in the study, in the “Materials and Methods” section of the article, animal rights are protected in accordance with the principles of Guidelines for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (http://www.nap.edu/catalog/5140.html). approval should be indicated.

-Ethics committee approval must be obtained for studies conducted in all disciplines including social sciences and for studies on clinical and experimental human and animals requiring ethical committee decision, this approval must be specified and documented in the article.
-The author must upload a copy of the document showing the Ethics Committee Decision to the system.
-An epidemiological study without an ethical committee decision is rejected without being taken into the evaluation process.
- There should be a statement about the research and publication ethics in the articles.
-In the studies requiring ethics board permission, information about the permission (name of the board, date and number no) should be included in the method section and also on the first / last page of the article.

In case studies, Informed Consent should be taken from the patients and stated in the manuscript. At the application stage of the manuscript, a copy of edit Informed consent should be submitted to the editor.
-In researches where it is not possible to decide whether an ethics board permit is required or not, an ethical permission document is not required from the Ethics Committee.

- Copyright regulations must be observed for the ideas and works of art used.

If the article contains a direct-indirect commercial link or financial support for the study, the authors should indicate to the editor on the presentation page that there is no commercial relationship with the commercial product, drug, company, etc. used, and if so, the relationship (consultant, other agreements).

Correction notice

Readers and authors inform us if they find mistakes in an article. Because mistakes could affect the understanding of data or evidence presented. A separate corection notice is published. This correction notice is usually published with a DOI online. If the article infringes legal and ethical rights, it is removed.

AUTHOR GUIDELINES

The journal accepts only online submissions. The manuscripts should be submitted online at the address: https://dergipark.org.tr/mutftd

Manuscripts should be edited in Microsoft Word XP or upper versions by PC compatible computers. Use Calibri font, in 11 point size, 1.15 line spacing are accepted standarts. Being each of the following sections on separate pages,:1) Article Title 2) Abstract and Keywords 3) Main Body of the Text, 4) References, 5) Tables and/or Figures, 6) Footnotes and 7) Acknowledgements and Conflict of Interest.

Authors should give numbers to the pages consecutively at the beginning of the first page. Title Page should also be uploaded.

TITLE PAGE

Title page should contain the followings: 1) title 2) a short running title (not required if the main title is shorter than six words) 3) full names, degrees, and affiliations of all authors, 4) full name, titles, surface mailing address, telephone numbers and e-mail address of the correspondence author, 5) full name, fixed and mobile telephone numbers, e-mail address of the author responsible for correspondence, 6) full names and province of the supportive institutions and organizations, 7) type of the study (original article, review etc.), 8) if the paper is presented in a congress previously, the title, date and place of the congress, 9) Conflict of interest, 10)ORCID ID of all authors.

ABSTRACT AND KEY WORDS

It is recommended that the abstracts should be at least 150 and at most 250 words. Abstracts in research articles should consist of purpose, method, findings and conclusion sections.
In Reviews, such a partition may not be made.

Abstracts are compulsory for the Letters to Editor. At least three key words in both English and Turkish (only for article in Turkish) should be given. English key words should be in conformity with “Medical Subject Headings (MESH)” (vide: www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/MBrowser.html). Turkish key words should be verbatim translation of the MESH terms (only for article in Turkish).

MAIN BODY OF THE TEXT

Original Article

The main text should be divided into sub-sections of introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion (and results and suggestions if desired). The main text should be limited to 4000 words, excluding tables, figures and references. Number of references should be maximum 40.The text might be divided into thematic subsections according to the main content. Considering the order in the text; references, graphics, diagrams, pictures, tables and figures should be enumerated sequentially. Abbreviations within the text should be avoided as far as possible.

Abbreviations should be defined in parenthesis where the word to be abbreviated is first used in the text and followed throughout the whole text. There should be no abbreviation sentence initially.

Review

In this type of studies sectioning is up to authors.The main text should be limited to 4000 words, excluding tables, figures and references. Number of references should be 60 at most.Necessary permissions should be obtained for sources and materials such as figures, pictures used in the article.

Biographies, classic scientific/medical book introduction, corporation publicity, history of disease, medical themed art works and medical objects presentation constitute the monographic studies. In this type of studies sectioning is up to authors, too.

Monography is a study in which the question of a place, a work, an author, an event or a scientific field can be evaluated.Monographs in Mersin University School of Medicine Lokman Hekim Journal of History of Medicine and Folk Medicine should be specific to the history of medicine.

Letters to Editor

Letters are accepted to be no longer than 750 words, and not to exceed 5 references

Folkloric Method and Product Publicity

It is suggested that they should not exceed 1500 words

REFERENCES

References should be enumerated consecutively, in the order in which they are cited in the text and they should be indentified as ‘superscript’ sentence finally right after the punctuation mark. (example: sentence.1). Nonconsecutive reference numbers should be punctuated by comma; consecutive ones should be punctuated by, not comma, but hyphen. (examples: sentence.2,4; sentence.1-3 or sentence.2,4,6-9).

List of references should be consistent with the standards of International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html).

Firstly, authors’ full surname and then only initials of the names should be written. Following authors’ name, international abbreviation or acronym of the publishing journal should be added; after that, year of publication, volume and issue number, lastly, page numbers should be given. References in press should be indicated in parenthesis after the name of the journal as ‘in press’.

In articles with up o three authors all authors’ names should be given:

Footnotes should be edited within a page and double-spaced. Enlargement size and technique should be given for microscopic images.

Any financial and commercial supports; translation, statistics, technical supports for graphics, tables and figures etc., editorial support should be mentioned.

Mersin University School of Medicine Lokman Hekim Journal of Medical History and Folk Medicine has published scientific articles such as "research, compilation, letter to the editor with reference, editorial comment and discussion, folkloric method" related to the history of medicine, folklore, medical sociology and folkloric medicine practices. and product promotion".It is a journal that publishes content. Articles submitted to Mersin University School of Medicine Lokman Hekim Journal of Medical History and Folk Medicine are evaluated by double-blind peer-review process and published electronically with free access. In addition, Mersin University School of Medicine Lokman Hekim Journal of Medical History and Folk Medicine provides information on situations considered as plagiarism and unethical behavior.
Writers
Articles submitted to Mersin University School of Medicine Lokman Hekim Journal of History of Medicine and Folkl Medicine must be original studies on medical history, folklore, medical sociology and folkloric medicine practices.
All sources used in articles (authors, online pages, personal interviews, etc.) should be cited accurately and appropriately.
It should be stated that the articles sent to the journal were not sent to another journal and the Copyright Transfer Form should be filled.
Persons who do not contribute intellectually to the article should not be listed as authors.
Conflicts of interest regarding the submitted article should be stated and the reason should be explained.
Authors may be required to submit raw data regarding their work to the editorial board while in the peer review process, in which case the authors are expected to share their raw data with the editorial board. Authors are obliged to keep the data/sources used for a published article for submission when requested by the editor.
When authors detect an error in their work, they should inform the editor and the editorial board and cooperate for the correction or withdrawal process.
Referees
All articles submitted to Mersin University School of Medicine Lokman Hekim Journal of Medical History and Folk Medicine are evaluated by double-blind peer-review process. Double-blind refereeing means keeping the authors secret from the referees and the referees from the authors in order to ensure an impartial, objective and independent evaluation process. Articles are sent to the referees from the journal management system for evaluation. The referees are required to fill out a form that includes the contribution of the article they evaluated to the fields of medical history, folklore, medical sociology and folkloric medicine, their decisions about whether the article is publishable and the reasons for these decisions. The ethical responsibilities and roles of the referees of the Mersin University School of Medicine Lokman Hekim Journal of Medical History and Folk Medicine are as follows:
• Referees are only required to referee articles related to their field of expertise.
• Referees are expected to agree to referee articles that do not have conflicts of interest. When reviewers realize any conflict of interest, they should notify the editor and refuse to referee the article.
• Reviewers should evaluate the articles impartially and objectively.
• Referees are required to fill in the Referee Evaluation Form for the articles they evaluate. In this form, the referees are required to state their decision on whether the article they are evaluating is publishable or not, and the reasons for their decision.
• Referees are required to complete their evaluations within the time given to them and are expected to comply with the ethical responsibilities set forth herein.
Editor
The editor is responsible for all articles published in the journal. The ethical duties and responsibilities of the editor are as follows:
General Responsibilities
• The editor is responsible for making efforts to increase the quality of the journal and contribute to its development.
• The editor must support the freedom of expression of the authors.
Relations with Readers
• The editor should make sure that the sections in the journal that do not require peer review (correction, invited papers, conference announcements, etc.) are clearly stated.
• The editor should make an effort to match the published articles with the knowledge and skills of the journal readers.
Editors’ Relationships with Readers
The editors are responsible for taking into account the feedback from the readers, researchers and practitioners about the published works and to provide the necessary responses and take necessary actions.
Editors’ Relations with the Reviewers
The editor should ask the referees to evaluate the articles according to their knowledge and expertise. Thus, it should be ensured that the articles are evaluated appropriately by experts in the field.
• The editor is obliged to request that the referees state that there are no conflicts of interest regarding the article before evaluating it.
• The editor is required to convey to the referees all necessary information regarding the referee evaluation process and what is expected from the referees.
• The editor should ensure that the peer-review process is carried out with double-blind peer-review and should not disclose the referees to the authors and the authors to the referees.
• The editor should evaluate the referees according to their timing and performance.
• The editor should create a database of referees and update the database according to the performance of the referees.
• The editor should remove the referees who make rude and unqualified comments or return late from the referee list.
• The editor should constantly renew and expand the referee list according to the referees' fields of expertise.
Relations with Authors
• The editor should constantly update the publication and writing guidelines and the sample template regarding what is expected of the authors from them.
• The editor should evaluate the articles sent to the journal in terms of journal writing rules, the importance of the work, and originality, and if he decides to reject the article during the first submission process, he should clearly and impartially convey to the authors the reason for this. During this process, if it is decided that the article needs to be revised in terms of grammar, punctuation and/or spelling rules (margins, appropriate reference, etc.), the authors should be informed about this issue and they should be given time to make the necessary corrections.
• Submission and acceptance dates should be included in the articles.
• When the authors request information about the status of their articles, the authors should be informed about the status of their articles in a way that does not disturb the double-blind peer-review process.
Relations with the Editorial Board
• The editor should communicate the publishing and writing rules to the new editorial board members and explain what is expected of them.
• The editor should convey the most up-to-date version of the publishing and writing rules to the members of the editorial board.
• The editor should evaluate the members of the editorial board and elect the members who will actively participate in the development of the journal to the editorial board.
• The editor should inform the members of the editorial board about their roles and responsibilities below.

Plagiarism and Unethical Behaviors
All articles sent to Mersin University School of Medicine Lokman Hekim Journal of Medical History and Folk Medicine are scanned with the IThenticate (http://www.ithenticate.com/) software program before they are published. The similarity rate is 15% and the articles below are accepted for publication. Articles exceeding this rate are examined in detail and sent back to the authors for revision or correction if deemed necessary. If plagiarism or unethical behavior is detected, they are rejected for publication.
However, if there is an opinion that any article, such as an article, book, newspaper, belonging to someone else, a part of the work, completely or partially - without specifying the source, is copied or used by changing the linguistic and structural expression of the thoughts and views in any work, even if the similarity rate is low. Even correction can be requested or denied.
Listed below are some unethical behaviors:
• Mentioning those who did not contribute intellectually to the study as authors.
• Not specifying the people who contributed intellectually to the study as authors.
• Not specifying if the article was produced from the author's master's/doctoral thesis or a project.
• Slicing, that is, publishing more than one article from a single study.
• Not reporting conflicts of interest regarding submitted articles.
• Deciphering the double-blind refereeing process.

Application Evaluation Process
Manuscripts sent to Mersin University School of Medicine Lokman Hekim Journal of Medical History and Folk Medicine for evaluation are evaluated by the Editor at the pre-control stage. At this stage, the editor evaluates the compliance of the manuscript with the spelling rules, scientific originality and priority. Manuscripts that are not found appropriate in the pre-check by the editor are rejected. For the manuscripts that are planned to be evaluated by the referee in the pre-control, a double-blind peer review evaluation process is carried out with at least two referees. All statements and opinions expressed in the manuscripts published in Mersin University School of Medicine Lokman Hekim Journal of History of Medicine and Folk Medicine reflect the views of the author(s).
Each individual listed as an author should fulfill the authorship criteria recommended by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). The ICMJE recommends that authorship should be based on the following 4 criteria:

4. Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.
In addition to being accountable for their own work, authors should have confidence in the integrity of the contributions of their co-authors and each author should be able to identify which co-authors are responsible for other parts of the work.
All of those designated as authors should meet all four criteria for authorship, and all who meet the four criteria should be identified as authors. Those who provided a contribution but do not meet all four criteria should be recognized separately on the title page and in the Acknowledgements section at the conclusion of the manuscript.
Mersin University School of Medicine Lokman Hekim Journal of History of Medicine and Folk Medicine requires that corresponding authors submit a signed and scanned version of the authorship contribution form (available for download through) during the initial submission process in order to appropriately indicate and observe authorship rights and to prevent ghost or honorary authorship. Please note that the list of authors on the final manuscript will be presented in the order provided on this form. Corrections & Retractions
The reader expects from a published article to be accurate, complete and attributable. Since articles can be read and cited as soon as they are published, subsequent changes could potentially affect those who read and cite the previous version.
